GEO in 2026: How Indian Businesses Get Found on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews

If your website traffic has quietly slipped over the past year while your rankings stayed roughly the same, you are not imagining it. The way people find businesses has changed, and most Indian brands have not adjusted their content for it yet.

The traffic math changed in 2026

Three numbers explain most of what happened.

  • AI Overviews now appear on 48% of all Google searches as of March 2026, across more than 200 countries and 40 languages.

  • When an AI Overview appears, organic click-through rate drops between 34% and 61%. Desktop CTR can be cut roughly in half; mobile falls by about a third.

  • Traffic from AI search engines to websites has grown roughly 16x since 2024.

So you are losing clicks at the top of Google while a new channel opens up that most of your competitors are still ignoring.

The visitors you do get from AI are worth more

This is the part most people miss. AI referral traffic is still small in volume, but it converts far better than ordinary search traffic.

  • Seer Interactive’s benchmark study found ChatGPT-referred sessions converted at 15.9% and Perplexity at 10.5%, against 1.76% for Google organic.

  • Across studies, AI search traffic converts at roughly 4.4x the rate of traditional organic search.

  • ChatGPT accounts for about 74.8% of all AI referral traffic, Gemini about 11.6%, and Perplexity about 7.2%.

That makes sense when you think about intent. Someone who arrives after an AI has already answered their question and recommended you is much further down the funnel than someone idly clicking a blue link.

GEO is not SEO with a new name

Traditional SEO wins by ranking on a page of links. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) wins by becoming the citation inside the answer. A page can sit at position one on Google and never once be quoted by ChatGPT, because AI systems select for different things: extractable answers, sourced claims, and independent corroboration of your brand elsewhere on the web.

The seven-step GEO playbook

  1. Answer first, elaborate second. Open every section with a direct answer in 40 words or less, then expand. AI models lift these short, self-contained passages.

  2. Attach a source to every claim. Statistics with named sources get cited far more often than unsupported assertions. Vague marketing copy is effectively invisible to AI.

  3. Structure for extraction. Phrase your H2s as the questions people actually ask. Keep one idea per section. Use tables and lists for comparisons.

  4. Build mentions off your own site. AI models weigh how often and how credibly your brand is discussed elsewhere: directories, review sites, industry publications, forums. This is closer to digital PR than link building.

  5. Get into Bing’s index. ChatGPT Search retrieves through Bing. If you are not in Bing Webmaster Tools with a submitted sitemap, you are invisible to the single largest source of AI referrals.

  6. Show real experience. Case studies, original data, named authors and specifics beat generic advice. AI systems consistently favour content that demonstrates first-hand experience and clear authority.

  7. Measure it. Build a GA4 segment for referrals from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. You cannot improve what you are not tracking.

What not to waste time on

Google confirmed in its 2026 guidance that llms.txt files, artificial content chunking and special AI-specific schema are not required for generative search. Several tools are currently being sold on the promise that they are essential. They are not. Standard technical SEO plus genuinely useful, experience-led content remains the reliable path.

Why this matters more in India right now

  • Roughly 78% of Indian businesses now use AI somewhere in their marketing, but very few have adapted their website content for AI retrieval.

  • ChatGPT leads adoption in India with Gemini close behind, so optimising for both is worth the effort.

  • Voice and regional-language queries are growing quickly, which favours conversational, question-led content over keyword-stuffed pages.

The gap between adoption and optimisation is the opportunity. In most Indian categories, the brands being cited by AI assistants today are simply the ones that happened to publish clear, well-sourced content. Not necessarily the biggest players.

Your first-week checklist

  • Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.

  • Take your five most commercially important pages and rewrite the opening of each section as a direct 40-word answer.

  • Add a named author and a published date to every article.

  • Add at least one sourced statistic to each key page.

  • Set up a GA4 segment for AI referrers and take a baseline reading today.

  • Search your own top three queries in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Note who gets cited. That is your real competitor set now.
